  • Description

Syrian Arab Airlines has taken delivery of two new Boeing 747 CB "jumbo" jets. The new aircraft arrived at Damascus International Airport on Saturday (29 May). They are the first of five such aircraft on order from Boeing in a major expansion of Syria's national airline.
The Syrian Minister of Transport, Naaman Al-Zein, flew in one of the aircraft on the delivery flight from the United States. High-ranking Boeing officials and key staff of the airline also flew to Damascus on the aircraft.
The Syrian airline, like many others in the Middle East, is experiencing a big upsurge in air travel as part of the general economic boom in the area. Airlines in the region are recording growth of up to 50 percent. The trend is towards higher revenue per passenger with a noticeable increase in first-class rather than economy fares. Last year, the airlines of the Middle East ordered an estimated GBP200 million sterling (about 370 million U.S. dollars) worth of new airliners - most of them Boeings.
