Hundred of South Africans gathered at Aloe Fjord, Orange Free State, April 6, to watch an aquatic carnival. The day's entertainment started well with an excellent solo performance by European Water-Ski Champion M. Muller. This was followed by motorboat racing.
But then, abruptly ending the carnival, came the rain - heavy driving rain that turned the ground for miles around into a slippery, sliding mass of mud. Cars attempted to leave immediately for home but many were soon stuck and in need of help.
Despite mud and rain, people just had to gather round the barbecue for a meal. Better to slide around on a full stomach than an empty one.
Spectators took their disappointment in a light-hearted way. Off came shoes and stockings and on went the shrieks and giggles as the girls struggled to keep balance. Some did not succeed ..... out then it was that sort of day.
