  • Description

President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire flew into Cairo on Sunday (December 16) for talks on the Middle East situation with Egypt's President Anwar Sadat.

President Mobutu arrived for his two-day visit from Tripoli, where he had talks with the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. The Zaire President was met at Cairo airport by the Egyptian Vice-President Hussein El-Shafei, an other senior officials.

African Ambassadors and Zaire nationals were also at the airport to greet the African head of state.

President Sadat suffering from bronchitis stayed away from the airport, but held talks with President Mobutu later in the evening at the Presidential retreat at Kanater, outside Cairo.

The two Presidents reviewed recent developments in the Middle East crisis, and Africa's role in the search for a peace settlement. They also discussed bilateral relations between their countries.

President Mobutu -- who severed Zaire's diplomatic relations with Israel in support of the Arab cause -- was later the guest of honour at a banquet given by Vice President Hussein El-Shafei.
