Background: VISNEWS cameras filmed the chaotic conditions in and around London, Jan 29, caused by the dense blanket of fog and ice now smothering the Home Counties and Southern England. The worst fog since 1952 forced London Airport to a standstill...halted ships .. reduced and cancelled train services...Cars and lorries bunched together in frightened convoys caused multiple crashes.
About 50 counties and over 40,000 miles of road are affected. Only the extreme parts of North Scotland and parts of the North and West are fog-free. During the day the visibility was down to between 10 and 50 yards in the whole of South-East England. Worst hazard was the "black" (i.e. transparent and therefore invisible) ice coating on the roadways. Motorists groping their way along kerbsides were suddenly finding themselves broadsiding across the roads to the danger of oncoming traffic. Motoring associations (AA and RAC) reported hundreds of 'help' calls per hour for their breakdown services.
