Background: Sir Joshua Hassan's Gibraltar Labour Party Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights won the general election there on Friday(June 23). His party's battle for government against the ruling Integration with Britain Party - which called an early election after three years in power -- was fought largely on the issue of the future of the state.
Before the campaign the IWBP leader and Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Major Robert Peliza, accused Sir Joshua of willingness to "do a deal with Spain", which claims sovereignty over the neighbouring British colony. Sir Joshua denied the charge during the two-week election campaign.
The final election result -- 37,722 votes for Sir Joshua's party and 35,375 for the IWBP -- gives the government eight of 15 seats in Parliament.
