TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 2: DR. VON HABSBURG: This is one of the major works in the sale which we are holding on June the 26th, coming from the collection of the late Chancellor Adenauer. It's by Lucas Cranach, one of the few altar pieces he painted, coming directly from the family who commissioned it, and containing one of the most marvellous portraits that Cranach ever painted. The Pieta by Josef von Kalkar was one of the favourite works of the late Chancellor. It hung in his study. It came from a relative of his originally in the nineteenth century, the collection Vyer (?), and afterwards belonged to the Dukes of (indistinct) and went into the (indistinct) Museum in Cologne, certainly one of the best sources for European paintings. This marvellous portrait of a young lady is by one of the rarest German artists of the 15th century, Martin Schongauer. This is another of the late Chancellor's major German pictures. It hung in his drawing room. painted circa 1400. This (indistinct) by the Master St. Veronica is in my opinion the finest work that we have coming from the collection of the late Chancellor. It hung in his study.

Background: A group of important art works, once owned by the late West German chancellor Dr. Konrad adenauer, is to be auctioned in London next month. The auctioneers, Christies, placed the pictures on show today.
The 36 works, all of them old masters, are mostly of the Gothic and renaissance periods. They cover the Italian, Flemish, French, German and Spanish schools.
The sale is on behalf of Mr. Heinz Kisters, who helped Dr. Adenauer to assemble his collection, and of several anonymous vendors.
Outstanding among the group is an altarpiece by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Others are a Pieta by Joest von Kalkar and the Holy Family with Saints by Veronese.
One of Christies experts, Dr. Ceza von Habsburg -- a great-great-grandson of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria -- was responsible for the negotiations which resulted in the forthcoming sale. He led the camera on a guided tour of the works on display.
