A group of important art works, once owned by the late West German chancellor Dr. Konrad adenauer, is to be auctioned in London next month. The auctioneers, Christies, placed the pictures on show today.
The 36 works, all of them old masters, are mostly of the Gothic and renaissance periods. They cover the Italian, Flemish, French, German and Spanish schools.
The sale is on behalf of Mr. Heinz Kisters, who helped Dr. Adenauer to assemble his collection, and of several anonymous vendors.
Outstanding among the group is an altarpiece by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Others are a Pieta by Joest von Kalkar and the Holy Family with Saints by Veronese.
One of Christies experts, Dr. Ceza von Habsburg -- a great-great-grandson of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria -- was responsible for the negotiations which resulted in the forthcoming sale. He led the camera on a guided tour of the works on display.
