  • Description

Herr Willy Brandt, the first West German Chancellor to visit Czechoslovakia, signed an historic treaty in Prague on Tuesday (December 11) nullifying the 1938 Munich 'appeasement' pact.

The Munich pact signed by Britain, France, Italy and Germany allowed Hitler to take Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland territory just before the last World War. On Tuesday the two countries' leaders also established diplomatic relations.

Herr Brandt said the treaty could not undo any of the terrible thing that had happened between the two countries, but it opened the path to new and peaceful good neighbours policy.

Herr Brandt and west German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel singed the treaty with Czechoslovak Prime Minister Lubomir Strougal and Foreign Minister Bohuslav Chnoupek in Prague's 17th century Cernin Palace.

It took two years of Czechoslovakia and West Germany to agree on a formula invalidating the Munich pact. The West Germans did not want any harmful legal consequences for the three million Sudeten Germans expelled from Czechoslovakia after the war.

West German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel said Bonn would be establishing diplomatic relations with Hungary and Bulgaria in the next few days. Hungary and Bulgaria have been waiting out of solidarity with Czechoslovakia.

On Wednesday Herr Brandt laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown warrior at the Vitkov National Memorial. He then had brief talks with the General Secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party Dr. Gustav Husak and Dr. Strougal before leaving for home.
