  • Description

Some people like to take a quiet stroll in the country, others like to watch the passing countryside from the windows of a fast or, some people just prefer to stay at home.

But these hardy young men like to get right down to nature. Not for them the open, well-made highway, happily putting away mile after mile of countryside with the promise of a hot tea and warm fire at the end of the journey.

For them the muddy country lane, deep pools, long hills and dangerous slopes - end a bicycle.

Slipping and sliding round on two wheels they tumble over rocks, pools, other riders, themselves and almost everything in sight as battle for the British National Cycle-Cross Championships at Bagshot on February 9th.

To add to the complication, more than one spectator got in the way of the riders and managed to spoil a chance or two of winning.

But, despite all those complications, boarded Don Stone managed to inch home by a narrow two fast to win the title - and then promptly collapsed over the bonnet of a nearby car.

Revived by the inevitable cup of tea - the oldest English cure-all-Stone was soon back on his feet.

But by then most of the spectators had left - by car, of course.
