  • Description

Delegates from about 120 countries gathered in Vancouver, Canada for the United National (UN) "HABITAT" conference on an international housing shortage caused by the population explosion.

The conference runs from Monday (31 May) for twelve days until 11 June. It is the biggest on human settlements so far staged by the U.N., and is the latest in a series of such major themes as environment, population and food.

Experts have calculated that unless there is a major war, the world's populations will be so swollen by the year 2000 that an extra home will have to be built for every one in existence now.

The dominant theme of the conference is that the population explosion will take place mostly in the poorer countries of the world. The UN has now power to build homes or plan cities, but the organisers view the Habitat conference as a global information exchange in which countries will learn from the examples of others.

The conference is expected to result in the formation of a permanent body to deal with the problems of human settlements.

SYNOPSIS: The Habitat symbol includes a circle for the globe, a triangle for shelter and a stick figure for man, and represents the world and how man can best live in it. More than one thousand delegates are attending the official conference, while as many as 30,000 people are expected to attended an unofficial informal conference on the same topic, also in Vancouver. The Habitat conference is the largest of its type ever organised by the UN, and is expected to result in the formation of a permanent body to deal with human settlements.
