Background: An Italian court today (6 November) jailed three Arab commandos for 15 years, following last month's armed attack on the Syrian embassy in Rome.

SYNOPSIS: Earlier in the trial the Rome Public Prosecutor had demanded 20 year sentences for the trio and when the verdict was announced said he would appeal against it. The three defendants were named as Hasnen Nabil, 25, a Lebanese, Mohamed Jahad, 20, a Syrian and Hossein Ahmed, 22 a Palestinian -- but the group told the court their names were false and referred to themselves simply as soldiers.

The three, claiming to be members of a group known as the "Black June Movement", told the court that their aim was to highlight "continued atrocities committed against the Palestinian people."
On the eleventh of October the three young commandos burst into the Syrian embassy in Rome armed with machine guns and hand grenades. They surrendered to police 90 minutes later, after an embassy official had been injured.

Italian police said at the time that the raid appeared to be an attempt to kidnap Syrian ambassador Faruk al Sharae, but he was not in the building when the attack took place. At the trial charges of attempted abduction were dropped because of lack of evidence.
