Background: LATEST NEWS FROM ZANZIBAR, WHERE A BITTER STRUGGLE FOR POWER IS REPORTED TO HAVE BROKEN OUT BETWEEN THE LEADERS OF LAST WEEKEND'S SUCCESSFUL REVOLUTION: "FREEDOM FIGHTERS" HAVE BEEN TOLD TO HAND IN THEIR ARMS, WHILE MORE THAN 100 ARMED TANGANYIKAN POLICE HAVE BEEN FLOWN IN TO HELP MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER. MEANWHILE THE DEPOSED SULTAN IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE IN LONDON TODAY (SUNDAY).

ON FRIDAY, 130 BRITISH CITIZENS LEFT THE ISLAND ON THE BRITISH NAVAL SURVEY SHIP "OWEN", ALONG WITH A PARTY OF AMERICAN - AND ONE BRITISH-CORRESPONDENTS, PREVIOUSLY DETAINED BY THE AUTHORITIES. THEY ARRIVED SAFELY IN MOMBASA, KENYA, WHERE THEY WERE MET BY THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER, SIR G. DE FREITUS. OTHER REFUGEES MANAGED TO LEAVE BY PLANE, BUT SERVICES TO AND FROM THE ISLAND HAVE BEEN AT AN ALMOST COMPLETE STANDSTILL.

THOSE THAT GOT AWAY BY PLANE AND SHIP INCLUDE CHILDREN RETURNING TO SCHOOL IN ENGLAND OR NAIROBI, AS WELL AS WOMEN AND CHILDREN WHOSE HUSBANDS ARE STAYING ON. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ABOUT 300 BRITONS ARE STAYING - INCLUDING ABOUT 100 EXPATRIATE CIVIL SERVANTS WHO HAVE BEEN ASKED TO STAY BY THE REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNMENT.
