    Background: ABUL ASSOUAD, SOUTHERN LEBANON

INTRODUCTION: Eleven people were killed and 45 were wounded when a car bomb exploded beside a Palestinian guerrilla checkpoint in southern Lebanon on Monday (28 September). The blast happened at the coastal village of Abul Assouad.

SYNOPSIS: The checkpoint was completely demolished and wreckage was strewn over a wide area. Seven guerrillas manning the checkpoint died immediately in the blast along with four by-standers.

Eyewitnesses said many of the injured were children who had been waiting for a school bus. The force of the explosion hurled bodies into nearby orange groves. An initial report that there had been two explosions had proved incorrect eye witnesses said.

Shops and cars in the area were also wrecked. The bomb had been placed in this Mercedes car.

The attack was the latest in a series of bomb blasts in Lebanon this month (September) which have killed more than 30 people and wounded about 140. No one has claimed responsibility for the Abul Assouad blast.
