  • Description

GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TODAY (TUESDAY) MET REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNIONS AND THE EMPLOYERS IN PARIS TO DISCUSS WAGE INCREASES IN RELATION TO THE COST OF LIVING. FEARS THAT THE TALKS WILL END IN DEADLOCK MADE THE PRICE OF GOLD ON THE FREE MARKET RISE TO ITS HIGHEST FIGURE FOR 21 YEARS TODAY.

THE SERIES OF TALKS WHICH BEGAN TODAY (TUESDAY) IN PARIS BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT, REPRESENTED BY THE MINISTER OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS, MR MAURICE SCHUMANN, THE EMPLOYERS AND THE VARIOUS UNIONS, ARE PART OF THE GRENELLE AGREEMENT MADE LAST YEAR TO SETTLE THE GENERAL STRIKE IN MAY/JUNE.

THE UNIONS ARE DEMANDING 12% OVERALL RISE IN WAGES, HALF OF WHICH THEY CLAIM WILL GO TOWARDS COVERING THE RISE IN THE COST OF LIVING SINCE JUNE, WHEREAS THE GOVERNMENT ONLY WANT TO GIVE 4%, WHICH IS WHAT THEY OFFERED TO WORKERS IN NATIONALISED INDUSTRIES FOR 1969. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE FUTURE OF THE FRANC DEPENDS ON THE SUCCESS OF THESE TALKS.
