  • Description

As Spaniards put flowers on loved ones' graves on All Saints' Day (1 November), the sister of Spain's dying leader General Francisco Franco was quoted as saying only a miracle could save him.
The General's serious condition added to the reflective atmosphere that always pervades All Saint's Day when thousands of Spaniards flock to cemeteries throughout the country.
The latest medical bulletin said the general's condition was the same after a peaceful night but he was lucid.
General Franco's Palace Chaplain celebrated mass for him and his family in sickroom. His sister, Dona Pilar who has given an interview to a Galician Daily newspaper said nightfall was the worst time for the General. She said "He spends the day peacefully but his condition worsens at about eight o'clock in the evening".
Asked if the medical bulletins were accurate, Dona Pilar said "They are even a little pessimistic but they tell the whole truth and are prepared by all the doctors".
Prince Juan Carlos who became acting Chief of State two days ago, settled in to his new role during the day. He presided over his first cabinet meeting on Friday ( 31 October) dominated by the crisis over the spanish Sahara.
