    GASTON ROELANTS, THE 30-YEAR-OLD BELGIAN DISTANCE RUNNING STAR, WON THE 'ROUND THE HOUSES' RACE IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) FOR THE THIRD TIME IN HIS RACING CAREER. THE RACE -- THE LAST ATHLETICS EVENT OF THE OLD YEAR AND THE FIRST OF THE NEW -- AROUSES TREMENDOUS ANNUAL ENTHUSIASM IN THE BRAZILIAN CITY.

    THE RACE IS TIMED TO END AT MIDNIGHT ON NEW YEAR'S EVE. ON THIS OCCASION, THE RACE REVERTED TO THE TORTUOUS, HILLY TYPE OF COURSE FOR WHICH, UNTIL 1966/67, IT WAS FAMOUS, IN 1966/67 IT WAS CHANGED TO A FLAT, MONOTONOUS THREE LENGTHS OF THE AVENIDA PAULISTA.

    ROELANTS COMPLETED THE 5 ???? MILE (8,500 METRES) COURSE IN 24 MINUTES 31.2 SECONDS. YESTERDAY'S PERFORMANCE CROWNED HIS GREAT RECORD IN THE RACE -- HE WON IT IN 1964 AND 1965, AND FINISHED SECOND LAST YEAR. THE BELGIAN POLICEMAN WAS THE ONLY COMPETITOR AMONG THE 22 OVERSEAS RUNNERS WHO HAD PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE OF THE RACE.

    SECOND WAS A SURPRISE ENTRY -- TIM JOHNSTON, A BRITISH SOLICITOR. HE FLEW IN FROM MEXICO, WHERE HE WAS ON HOLIDAY, TO JOIN THE OFFICIAL ENTRY, DICK TAYLOR. JOHNSTON'S TIME WAS 24 MINUTES 55.7 SECONDS.

    THIRD WAS DAVE ELLIS OF CANADA, WHO FINISHED THIRD IN THE FIELD OF OVER 260. TENS OF THOUSANDS OF CHEERING SPECTATORS WELCOMED THE WINNERS OVER THE FINISHING LINE, STREWING THE AIR WITH TICKERTAPE AND FILLING IT WITH CELEBRATORY FIREWORKS.
