  • Description

The world-famous carnival of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, reached its gaudy climax on Sunday night (February 9) with a huge dancing parade beneath a cloud of coloured illuminations strung across the city's main street.

Rio's renowned samba dancing schools were the core of the parade this year. There were twelve of them taking part, each troupe gorgeously costumed and preceded by a series of giant floats.

It is estimated that the show cost a million and a half dollars to stage - and it is free to those who can squeeze into the Avenida Presidents Antonio Carlos in Rio. those who cannot see it for themselves follow its progress on television from Sunday night through to Monday morning.

The carnival of Rio - which they call the most expensive free show in the world - is similar to many others held in other parts of the world immediately before the religious festival of Lent. But in Brazil, it has become the big event of the year, a night when all inhibition is thrown to the skies and a city gets down to enjoying itself.
