President William Tolbert of Liberia paid a flying visit to Sierra Leone on Monday (11 December). His 'plane touched down at Freetown International Airport at 11.35, and he left six hours later after lunch and talks with President Siaka Stevens.
President Stevens said the Liberian President has started the policy of informal meetings between heads of state which had made it easy for them to meet and confer easily.
SYNOPSIS: President Siaka Stevens welcomed Dr. William Tolbert, the Liberian President, when he made a flying visit to Sierra Leone this week. Few people knew beforehand that Dr. Tolbert was going to make his six-hour visit in the informal style he introduced to African politics.
The two Presidents visited the Liberian Embassy, where they were greeted by Mrs. Brewer, the Ambassador's wife. President Stevens later said Dr. Tolbert would long be remembered for introducing the policy of easy informal meetings between heads of state.
President Tolbert commented that great benefit could be derived from such meetings, completely free of formalities and protocol. They led to better understanding, and a more profitable execution of policies.
