  • Description

A group of the USAFE 701st Tactical Missile Wing, headquartered at Hahn Air Base, Germany, prepares for another simulated launching of the MATADOR.

The Missile Group, dispersed throughout Germany, constantly practice mobility exercises and simulated launchings to be instantly ready for any emergency and to increase efficiency and speed.

Training is exactly the same as actual launching procedures through the count down to zero. At this point, the T-33, especially modified for the task, flies over the launching site to simulate the MATADOR in flight. The pilot follows signal lights on the T-33's instrument panel which respond to missile guidance equipment operated by guidance detachments on the ground.

Effective training is realized for both launching and guidance crews as a T-33 goes in for the MATADOR.
