A pair of old Italian miniatures...lost for twenty years and recovered in California last week...went on display in Washington, D-C, Monday (4 February).
The two paintings are "Hercules and the Hydra" and "Hercules and Antaeus." Each a little larger than postcards...they were painted by Antonio Pelletuole, a contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci who lived more than four centuries age.
The miniatures opened a one-week exhibit at the National Gallery of Art less than an hour after the da Vinci masterpiece...the Mona Lisa...was taken from the gallery on route to New York City and a month-long appearance at the Metropolitan Museum. At a ceremonial opening for the two paintings...Attorney General Robert P.Kennedy spoke. He said Hercules' problem with the many-headed Hydra and the giant who could only be destroyed if held high in the air had certain applications today.
The Nazis looted the paintings twenty years ago from Florence.Hermann Geering had them for a while..then apparently Hitler get held of them. They dropped out of sight in 1945 and were presumed destroyed...until they reappeared in California last month in the hands of a German immigrants couple.
Chief Justice of the United States Earl and Warren also spoke.
