Background: VISNEWS hastened May 5 to London's Bond Sotheby's - auction house of the world's artistic masterpieces to look at 'Sails by Antibes', a 14 1/2 inch by 17 1/2 'pointillist-impressionist' Lot 109 representation of water, a yacht, trees, cliffs said to be by Paul Signac. (1863 - 1935)
It was Madame Jeannette Signac, the artist's daughter who first suggested the possibility of a forgery - Sotheby's art experts added the stamp of authority to her suspicious. She said in Paris last night: "It is a gross forgery. I have ordered Sotheby's to withdraw the painting and have forbidden its sale anywhere.

"Sotheby's sent me a photograph of the painting well after the catalogue was printed. She added: "I am more intent on catching the forger than anything else. I have managed to stop three water-colours and two oil paintings allegedly by my father, being sold in America this year. They were by the same hand that painted Lot 109"
Catalogue with a full-page reproduction, the "Signac" picture is described as "Signed and inscribed on the reverse... from the collections of L.Van Walle, Arthur Bloche, and Nicholas Feltgen."
Interpol, the international police organisation, and the French Surete Nationale are now working with Scotland Yard to trace its origin and history.

One of the policemen on the case is Chief Inspector Guy Isnard of the Surete who visited London last month to prevent the sale of another forged painting attributed to the French modern artist Francis Gruber.

When Sotheby's were asked by the VISNEWS reporter to give a price to this 'demoded' work of art they said "We have not any experience of works of this kind.

The painting was among 150 French Impressionist paintings to be offered for sale May 6. The sale may prove a record to equal the GBP781,000 taken when Jacob Goldschmidt's collection was sold in 1958.
