AN ARMADA OF TWENTY EIGHT SAILING SHIPS, INCLUDING FIVE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST WINDJAMMERS, SET SAIL TONIGHT (SATURDAY) FROM FALMOUTH, ON THE CORNISH COAST, FOR DENMARK IN THE 1966 RACE OF THE 'TALL SHIPS'.

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WERE AT FALMOUTH, ONCE A SMUGGLERS' PORT, FOR THE START OF THE GREAT RACE.

A VARIETY OF VESSELS ARE TAKING PART IN THIS YEAR'S RACE, INCLUDING A NUMBER OF SQUARE RIGGED SAILING SHIPS, NOW RARELY SEEN.

A FORCE FOUR WIND WAS BLOWING FOR THE START OF THE RACE TODAY, MAKING A MARVELLOUS SPECTACLE AS THE 'TIMBER' SHIPS HEADED TO SEA WITH SPINNAKERS BILLOWING.

THE RACE IS OVER 800 MILES (1,280 KM).

THIRTEEN SHIPS IN THE OCEANRACER CLASS WERE THE FIRST TO LEAVE, FOLLOWED BY TEN TOPSAIL SCHOONERS, AND A NUMBER OF SMALL CRAFT NOT DESIGNED FOR OCEAN RACING.

THE SPECTACLE OF THE START WAS PROVIDED BY FIVE SURVIVORS OF THE SAIL AGE OF SAILING - THREE NORWEGIAN AND TWO DANISH SQUARE RIGGERS OF OVER FIVE HUNDRED TONS.

THE FIELD IS BEING ESCORTED BY THE BRITISH DESTROYER, HMS DAINTY. THE SAILING SHIPS ARE EXPECTED TO REACH DENMARK ON JULY 18.

SEVENTEEN PRIZES ARE TO BE AWARDED. THE AWARDS WILL BE MA BY KING FREDERICK.
