On the island of Quemoy the forces of General Chiang Kai-Shek are building new and better defences. They are also training frogmen... a new force in the Nationalist Chinese army.
This frogmen force could be vital if ever the Nationalist Chinese were to launch an attack on the mainland. But at present the Nationalist Chinese are concentrating on two more vital projects...one is the completion of fortifications for 155 mm Howitzer guns. These guns will be the largest on the island and capable of firing atomic shells.
Each gun emplacement had to be excavated from solid rock. And, cleverly camouflaged, it is almost invisible from the air.
The most important fortification however, is the underground tunnel. It took two years to construct and links all parts of the island. Reports say that it is "miles" long and that it can accommodate thousands "of officers and men when the island is under fire".
It also includes an operations room... the nerve centre of the island's defences.. a conference room... a radio room... and living quarters for officers and men. All told, the underground defence system cost almost three million American dollars. Hundreds of engineers...and thousands of soldiers were employed on the job.
Despite shelling from the Mainland, and all the hard work, the soldiers can still find time for a little fun. Occasionally a Chinese organisation puts on a show to entertain the soldiers on duty. The dance that is most popular is the Latin American dance.. the Cha Cha.
Despite the fun, security never relaxes. There always are soldiers on guard...waiting for the day when shells again come raining down on the island... or when the Communist Chinese decide to launch an all-out attack.
