  • Description

California, land of luxury living and the veneration of everything that's new, has come up with a novel status symbol.

At Newberry Springs, half-way between Los Angeles and Las Vegas in the Mojave desert, families are creating their own lakes, with water pumped from underground.

There are now about a hundred of these artificial lakes dotted about the landscape. They come in any shape or size you want, and they make a swimming-pool in the back garden look common-place.

Families at Newberry Springs will pay anything from 30 to several hundred dollars a month to pump the water from beneath the earth's crust.

Although the land is desert, the water is there in plenty, in a vast underground lake.

John Horton and his wife have created a marvellous playground for themselves - a half-mile lake they use for water-skiing.
