  • Description

The 1975 Motor Show began on an optimistic note in the French capital with more new cars on show than had been exhibited for many years.

The Show coincides with the appearance of vehicles designed before the oil crises.....Most of them high fuel consumption cars.

It appears that most Frenchmen have forgotten the petrol shortage and that, despite a rise in the price of motor fuel and new French speed limits they are still determined to travel by car.

And a recent poll conducted in France showed that motorists were not going to be deterred from buying new cars despite a significant rise in prices.

It is just as well as there is not one car at the oldest motor show in the world below 10,000 Francs (1,100 pounds sterling).

For many years the award for the cheapest car at the show went to Citroen and its indefatigable "Deux Chevaux". But this year the Citroen basic model costs more than 11,000 Francs (1,200 pounds sterling) while the Skoda 100 from Czechoslovakia is selling at only 10,250 Francs (1,140 pounds sterling).

As usual the most expensive car at the show is one the Rolls Royce stand -- the Camargue model sells or 453,600 francs (50,000 pounds sterling), the price of a rather comfortable French country house.

There are only 28 cars exhibited under the price of 15,000 Francs (1,650 pounds sterling) and most of them are too small for people with more than one child.

In fact the message of this year's Paris Car Show is that the average family is going to have to find about 20,000 Francs (2,200 pounds sterling) if it wants to buy a new car.
