Kuwait Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Hamed al-Sabah has expressed a wish to see increased action towards achieving Arab solidarity. Sheikh al-Sabah was speaking at the end of a two day visit to Syria on Saturday (13 March).
On his arrival at Damascus airport on Friday (12 March) the Kuwaiti minister was met by Syrian Foreign Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam and other government officials. The two ministers later had talks at the Syrian Foreign Ministry.
During the visit Sheikh al-Sabah also met with President Hafez al-Assad and personally handed him a message from the Kuwait government. Reuters reported that the message was identical to one to be delivered to Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and was a plea for both leaders to realise the importance of Arab unity.
SYNOPSIS: Kuwait's Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Hamed al-Sabah received a warm welcome from Syria's President Hafez al-Assad in Damascus, on Friday.
Sheikh al-Sabah had arrived in Syria earlier in the day for a two day visit and was met at Damascus airport by Syria's Foreign Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam.
During his meeting with President al-Assad Sheikh al-Sabah personally handed him a message from the Kuwait government. Reuters reported that the contents were identical to a message that will be given to Egypt's President Anwar Sadat.
The message conveyed Kuwait's deep desire for Arab unity and a plea for both leaders to appreciate the necessity of encouraging and maintaining that unity.
Later in the day Sheikh al-Sabah also had talks with Foreign Minister Khaddam.
As well as touching on topics of mutual co-operation between Kuwait and Syria it is understood that once again the importance of solidarity in the Arab world was discussed by the two ministers.
