SYNOPSIS: Jo Jo Kimpuani of Zaire--wearing the striped shorts--faced up against Ghana's Don Patterson in the fight for the African light-welterweight title in the el-Wal Stadium in Accra, Ghana, on Saturday.

The championship fight started well...with punches flying right, left and centre as Kimpuani and his Ghanaian opponent laid into each other from the opening bell. But too many clinches broke up the rhythm of the match.

The Ghanaian crowd were rooting for the home...but a mighty blow from Kimpuani put Patterson on the canvas before the first round had ended. He managed to get up just before the ten count.

Round three...and Kimpuani was determined to cash in on the early lead head taken over Patterson. Referee Simeon de Fanti, from Togo, again had to set in to separate another clinch. Kimpuani said later the Ghanaian was already showing signs of fatigue.

The fans thought Patterson's chances improved when he cut Kimpuani in the fourth round...but by the sixth, the stronger Zaire fighter was ready to finish the match. A heavy body-blow put Patterson on the canvas yet again...and this time he stayed there long after referee de Fanti had closed the count. Kimpuani was announced the winner...and acknowledged the crowd's long applause.

The defeated Patterson didn't move from the floor of the ring and had eventually to be carried out to his dressing-room. As the fans clambered in to congratulate the victorious Kimpuani, promoters were already hinting about a return match...a challenge to Kimpuani's brand-new African title.
