Background: Swimming and East German swimmers demonstrated their world supremity at the 24th international swimming meeting in East Berlin on Wednesday (12 April) by taking most of the titles. The seven nation meeting held annually at the start of the season is seen in swimming circles as providing a powerful guide as to who will dominate the World Championships due to be held in West Berlin in August. And as it was, the East German girls who have dominated world swimming for nearly four years, showed that this year they are sure to maintain their world standing.

SYNOPSIS: The start of the mens 100 metres freestyle with a strong contingent of foreign swimmers challenging the East Germans. Ulrich Temps of West Germany in lane three and Richard Burrell of Great Britain in lane four presented the stiffest opposition in view of the fact that there were no Australian or American swimmers competing. It was the West German who took first place with a winning time of 53.39 seconds followed by Gunter Schroder of East Germany and Richard Burrell in third place.

The women's 100 metres freestyle had the air of a domestic race as it featured no swimmers apart from East German girls, and characterised their recent world domination in the pool. Barbara Krause won in 55.80 seconds followed by fellow Dynamo Berlin club-mate Heike Witt, and in third place Birgit Wachtler.

The women's 100 metres butterfly was also an all_East German affair. The contest organised by the East German Olympic Committee had originally been scheduled for last December, and following the switch only attracted 40 swimmers from abroad. Again it was a Dynamo Berlin club member who took first place. Andrea Pollack, double Olympic champion, in one minute 0.81 seconds.

The women's 200 metres butterfly, and again it was 16-year old Andrea Pollack who won. This time she was just 0.24 seconds outside her own world record of 2 minutes 11.20 seconds set last week.
