The West German Foreign Minister, Hans-Dietrich Genscher arrived in Tanzania on Sunday (26 February). It was the start of an African tour involving three nations during which he is expected to discuss West German development aid.
SYNOPSIS: On arrival at Dar es Salaam international airport, Herr Genscher and the West German delegation were greeted by Benjamin Mkapa, the Tanzanian Foreign Minister and other officials. Before his three days visit Bonn Government officials announced that he was expected to finalise arrangements for a seven million U.S. dollar aid agreement with the Tanzanian authorities. This was expected to ease the pressure on Tanzania's mounting foreign debt bill.
As well as discussing Tanzania's current financial situation the two men were scheduled to deal with the situation in Bamibia and Rhodesia as Benjamin Mkapa explained to reporters.
Later, Herr Genscher met the Tanzanian President, Julius Nayerere to discuss the situation in Southern Africa and the Horn of Africa in the light of foreign influence in the areas.
