    THE MAURITIUS GOVERNOR MADE A REQUEST FOR TROOPS AFTER A WEEKEND OF VIOLENT CLASHES BETWEEN THE MOSLEMS AND CREOLES WHO MAKE UP THE MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION OF THE BRITISH ISLAND COLONY IN THE INDIAN OCEAN. BRITAIN RESPONDED WITH A DECISION TO AIRLIFT ABOUT 150 MEN FROM SINGAPORE. THEY ARRIVED TO FIND PORT LOUIS, THE USUALLY BUSTLING CAPITAL, ALMOST DESERTED, MANY OF ITS STREETS LITTERED WITH THE RUBBLE LEFT BY RIOTERS.

    BEFORE THE BRITISH TROOPS ARRIVED LOCAL FORCES HAD CARRIED OUT PATROLS AND CLEARED ROADBLOCKS.

    WHEN THE BRITISH SOLDIERS ENDED THEIR ELEVEN-HOUR FLIGHT FROM SINGAPORE THEY WERE DRIVEN IMMEDIATELY TO PORT LOUIS, WHERE THEY BEGAN PATROLLING. THE FOLLOWING DAY THE SOLDIERS PARADED IN TRUCKS, SEARCHING HOUSES AND ROUNDING UP SUSPECTS.
