  • Description

POLICE IN BUENOS AIRES HAVE USED TEAR-GAS AND HIGH-PRESSURE HOSES TO BREAK UP WORKERS MARCHING ON THE MUNICIPAL HEADQUARTERS. THE MARCH WAS A DEMONSTRATION OF SOLIDARITY WITH STRIKING MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES.

THE MARCH WENT AHEAD DESPITE A POLICE BAN. IT CAME AS MUNICIPAL DUSTMEN, GRAVE-DIGGERS AND NURSES CONTINUED A 19-DAY-OLD STRIKE FOR MORE PAY. THE GENERAL CONFEDERATION OF LABOUR CALLED FOR THE SOLIDARITY DEMONSTRATION AND MARCH AFTER POLICE HAD RAIDED A UNION HEADQUARTERS.

HIGH-PRESSURE HOSES WERE TRAINED ON THE DEMONSTRATORS AS THEY TRIED TO MARCH ON THE CITY HALL IN THE HEART OF BUENOS AIRES. POLICE FORCED THE MARCHERS BACK, BUT THEY REGROUPED AND CLASHED WITH THE POLICE OVER A WIDE AREA OF THE BUSINESS AND BANKING DISTRICT. FIFTY DEMONSTRATORS WERE ARRESTED AS THEY TRIED TO BARRICADE A STREET WITH AN OVERTURNED TAXI. A POLICE SPOKESMAN LATER SAID THAT 82 PEOPLE HAD BEEN EVENTUALLY CHARGED WITH DISORDERLY CONDUCT AS A RESULT OF THE DEMONSTRATIONS.
