Background: Scenes in Ruanda - Urundi - the African territory currently torn by large scale inter-tribal war-were filmed, November 11, by a Visnews cameraman.

Along the road from Vsumburu, on Lake Tanganyika's northern shores, to the administrative centre of Astrida, lone cars have been attacked by tribesmen, and for this part of the journey our cameraman travelled in convey under army protection. Tribesmen imprisoned under security regulations and warriors wounded during the fighting the fighting were filmed at Astrida.

For the journey from Astrida to Nyanza there was no military protection, but the fighting was going on some distance from the road. In Nyanza 25-year-old, 6ft. 9 inches tall King Kageri, monarch of Ruanda Urundi's ruling Watutsi tribe, was filmed with Commander-in-Chief of the Belgian Congo, General Janssens.

General Janssens said the situation, which had been completely out of control, was now improving.

The Watutsi tribe are fighting the Bahutus, and so far several hundred deaths have been reported.

Ruanda-Urundi is a United Nations trust territory administered by Belgium. Recently, Belgium announced plans for self-government and democratic reform in this primitive part of Africa. Belgian paratroops have been rushed to the scene of the fighting to help restore order.
