  • Description

The first airlink between Zambia and Mozambique was opened on Saturday (january 4) when a commercial airliner from Lourenco Marques touched down at Lusaka airport. The special flight carried journalists and representatives of the Mozambique transitional Government. The opening of the airlink follows negotiations between the two nations which began after Portugal announced it would grant independence to Mozambique. Under the air agreement Zambia Airways has been given twice weekly landing rights in Lourenco Marques.

The Mozambique airline DETA will operate two flights a week between Lourenco Marques and Luanda in Angola with the Lusaka stopover. The outward flight will operate on Thursdays and return on Saturdays.

The opening of the airlink is expected to greatly benefit both Zambia's and Mozambique's tourist industries. Until Portugal's announcement granting independence people from Mozambique were not allowed into Zambia.
