  • Description

THE FAVOURITES IN THE EAST AFRICAN SAFARI CAR RALLY, THE SWEDES, BENGT SODERSTROM AND GUNNAR PALM, WERE THE FIRST CREW TO COMPLETE THE SOUTHERN LEG OF THE RALLY TODAY (SATURDAY) BY ARRIVING BACK IN NAIROBI, KENYA, FROM DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA. OUR FILM WAS SHOT AT A CHECKPOINT IN THE SHIMBA HILLS, NEAR MOMBASA, AS THE CARS PASSED THROUGH TO TANZANIA ON THE SECOND DAY THE 3,100 MILES (ABOUT 5,000 KM) RALLY.

THE CARS ARRIVING AT THE SHIMBA HILLS CHECKPOINT HAD ALREADY DRIVEN MORE THAN 500 MILES (800 KMS), AND SOME DRIVERS WERE ALREADY LOOKING THE WORST FOR WEAR. HOWEVER, ONLY THREE CARS HAD DROPPED OUT AT THIS STAGE. LAST NIGHT, TWELVE CARS HAD DROPPED OF ACCIDENTS. SOME DRIVERS HAVE COMPLAINED OF DELIBERATE ATTEMPTS TO FORCE THEM INTO HAVING ACCIDENTS.

THE DRIVERS COMPLAINED OF LOGS ROLLED ACROSS THE ROAD, AND STONES BEING AT THEIR CARS, MAINLY BY BOYS, IN BOTH EASTERN KENYA AND TANZANIA. ONE DRIVER SHOWED REPORTERS A FIST-SIZED ROCK WHICH SMASHED THROUGH HIS WINDSCREEN JUST OUTSIDE MOMBASA, THE SCENE OF OUR FILM. THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT, BEFORE THE RALLY, SAID A SERIOUS VIEW WOULD BE TAKEN OF ANY UNFRIENDLY BEHAVIOUR BY KENYANS TOWARDS COMPETITORS ON THE ROADS.

THE LEADERS IN THE RALLY HAVE NOW COMPLETED THE FIRST LED BY ARRIVING BACK IN NAIROBI. TONIGHT THEY'LL GO ON THE NORTHERN LED UP TO KAMPALA AND BACK TO NAIROBI, WHERE THE SAFARI ENDS ON MONDAY.
