  • Description

When President Nixon leaves on his historic seven-day visit to the People's Republic of China next week (21 February), he will fly aboard United States Air Force "VC-137C", known throughout the service as Air Force One.

Air Force One is commanded by Lt. Colonel Ralph Albertazza, the first Air Force pilot qualified to fly the Boeing 707. Other crew members -- engineers, communications experts and navigational officers -- are reputed to be the best in the United States and are hand-picked.

The aircraft is a self-sufficient "Flying White House" outfitted and staffed to permit the President to conduct business and entertain guests while en route. Air Force One carries a sophisticated communications system which keeps him in touch with people anywhere in the world by voice or on wire -- if necessary in code. Complete galley facilities afford ample space for flight stewards to prepare and serve first-class meals to the President and other passengers.
