    CHINESE REFUGEES FROM THE INDONESIAN SECTOR OF BORNEO HAVE OCCUPIED TWO SMALL COASTAL VILLAGES, IN THE PROVINCE OF WEST KALIMANTAN. THEY HAVE FLED TO THE VILLAGES AFTER COMMUNIST ACTIVITIES NEAR THEIR HOMES.

    THE REBELLION WAS SET OFF BY COMMUNISTS FROM MALAYSIAN BORNEO WHO WERE SHELTERING IN THE INDONESIAN SECTOR DURING THE CONFRONTATION WITH MALAYSIA. THE STRENGTH OF THE REBELS IS SAID TO BE ABOUT 1000 MEN.

    MANY OF THE REFUGEES IN THE TWO COASTAL TOWNS HAVE DIED OF TUBERCULOSIS, MALNUTRITION, DYSENTRY AND STARVATION. THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT AND THE CATHOLIC WELFARE CENTRE ARE PROVIDING SOME FOOD AND SUPPLIES. THERE ARE MORE THAN 4000 REFUGEES IN THE VILLAGE OF PONTIANAK AND IN SINGKAVANG THERE ARE REPORTED TO BE ABOUT 12,000.
