  • Description

Kenya's President Jomo Kenyatta laid the foundation stone in the terminal building of Nairobi's new International Airport on Tuesday (28 October).

The terminal is capable of handling a total of two thousand arriving and departing passengers an hour and the Kenyan government hope the new airport will provide proof of the country's claim of being one of the most air minded countries in Africa, matched probably only South Africa.

Almost three quarters of the work on the 20 million pound (about 40 million US dollar) airport is now completed. It is expected to be finished by the end of next year. The World Bank provided most of the money through a loan agreement with the kenyan government in 1972 for about 14 million pounds sterling (29 million US dollars).

Traditional dancers and choirs provided the entertainment at the ceremony and President Kenyatta was in light hearted mood, punching the foundation stone to make sure he had laid it securely.
