  • Description

PRESIDENT DE GAULLE ON FRIDAY JOINED WARTIME COMRADES IN REMEMBERING HIS JUNE, 1940, RALLYING CALL TO THE FRENCH PEOPLE. SPEAKING FROM LONDON, DE GAULLE HAD SAID - "FRANCE HAS LOST A BATTLE, BUT FRANCE HAS NOT LOST THE WAR". THE DAY'S CELEBRATIONS WERE CLIMAXED BY A CEREMONY, TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ALMOST TO THE MINUTE AFTER THE HISTORIC BROADCAST, AT THE MONT VALERIEN MEMORIAL TO RESISTANCE DEAD NEAR PARIS.

AS PRESIDENT DE GAULLE DROVE TO THE MONUMENT HIS CAR PASSED OVER WHITE SIGNS PAINTED ON THE ROAD. THE READ "VIVE DE GAULLE", "VIVE LA FRANCE" AND "SOUVIENTS TOI" ('REMEMBER').

THOUSANDS OF EX-RESISTANCE WORKERS, WAR WIDOWS AND ORPHANS, AND EX-SERVICEMEN WERE GATHERED IN THE SQUARE. THE PRESIDENT WALKED SLOWLY TO THE MONUMENT AND DISAPPEARED BRIEFLY THROUGH A GOLDEN DOOR UNDER THE GRANITE CROSS OF LORRAINE. THEN HE REAPPEARED TO SALUTE THE ETERNAL FLAME. IT WAS A SHORT CEREMONY - AND THERE WERE NO SPEECHES.

AFTER THE CEREMONY THE PRESIDENT FORMALLY SHOOK HANDS WITH SPECIAL GUESTS AND SOME OF THE ONLOOKERS. THEN THE OCCASION BECAME MUCH LESS FORMAL AS PRESIDENT DE GAULLE MOVED INTO THE CROWD, SHAKING HANDS WITH SMALL CHILDREN, ELDERLY WAR VETERANS - AND SPECTATORS. HUNDREDS PRESSED TIGHTLY AROUND HIM - AND CHANTS OF "GAULLE...GAULLE...GAULLE..." BROKE OUT. ANXIOUS SECURITY MEN STAYED CLOSE TO THE PRESIDENT, UNTIL HE WAS ABLE TO REJOIN HIS CAR.
