Background: The Austrian Chancellor, Mr. Bruno Kreisky, leading a delegation of the Socialist International arrived in Damascus on Tuesday (12 March) to sound out the prospects of peace in the Middle East.
He arrived in the Syrian capital directly form Cairo where he conferred with Egyptian leaders, including President Sadat, whom, he said, was anxious to reach a peaceful settlement with Israel.
In Damascus, he had talks with the Syrian Prime Minister, Mr. Mahmoud Al Ayoubi, and members of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation.
Later, he described the atmosphere syria as one of high tension and almost a state of war, compared with the peaceful atmosphere in Cairo. His talks, he said, were not successful but he would not elaborate.
Mr. kreisky and the Socialist International delegation flew to Tel Aviv for talks with the ruling Israeli Labour Party, which is affiliated with the Socialist International. The delegation also planned to visit Jordan.
