Background: Emperor Bokassa of the Central African Empire continues to deny that his security forces massacred scores of schoolchildren last month...the issue which has caused the resignation of his country's Ambassador to France and the suspension of French military aid. The Emperor does concede that what he calls "grown-up youths" were killed by troops during rioting. He spoke to newsmen in Kigali, Rwanda, on Tuesday (22 May).
SYNOPSIS: Emperor Bokassa told reporters that there were people killed during the first riots...But he said they were not students. The Emperor said that people of several districts were fighting together with the students. They were armed with spears.
Emperor Bokassa said that when the students withdrew from the fighting with police the other people kept fighting with spears and knives. he said they killed and wounded a number of policemen and had thirteen killed on their side. The Emperor said that figure was confirmed by an official announcement.
