    THE 1969 SPRING COMPETITIVE WATER SKIING SEASON OPENED ON SUNDAY (16 MARCH) WITH THE WHEELERS WINTER WATER SKI TOURNAMENT AT RICKMANSWORTH. A NUMBER OF BRITISH STARS PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENTS AS WELL AS JEAN-JACQUES ZBINDEN, OF SWITZERLAND. M. ZBINDEN HAS WON MANY EUROPEAN WATER SKIING TITLES.

    THE COMPETITION WAS RUN ON A HANDICAP BASIS AND THERE WERE TWO EVENTS ONE WAS THE SLALOM, IN WHICH THE SKIER'S OBJECT IS TO MAKE AS MANY SUCCESSFUL PASSES THROUGH THE SIX-BOUT COURSE AT EVER-INCREASING SPEEDS. THE OTHER WAS JUMPING OVER A SIX FOOT (1.8 M) RAMP FOR MEN WITH A MAXIMUM BOAT SPEED OF 35 MILES PER HOUR (56 KM), AND EVER FIVE-FOOT RAMP (1.5 M) FOR WOMEN WITH A MAXIMUM BOAT SPEED OF 28 MILES PER HOUR (145 KM).

    AMONG THE OTHER COMPETITORS WAS THE BRITISH WOMEN CHAMPION, 16-YEAR-OLD LESLEY JACKSON, WHO COMPETED IN THE SLALOM. ??? JACKSON TOOK SECOND PLACE.

    AFTER THE COMPETITION, PRIZES WERE GIVEN TO THE TOP SKIER'S IN BOTH EVENTS. TONY JACOBS WON FIRST PLACE IN THE SLALOM ??? PRIZE AS OVERALL CHAMPION.

    THE FIRST PRIZE IN JUMPING WENT TO TERRY BURTON; AND BARRY KING TOOK THE SECOND PRIZE.

    THE CUPS WERE PRESENTED BY LORD AND LADY WAKEFIELD, PRESIDENT OF THE BRITISH WATER SKI FEDERATION.
