Background: Thousands of Moslems converged on Zaria Township last week (January 4) to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir. A two-day public holiday had been declared to allow people to celebrate the religious occasion.

In Zaria, Moslems were led in prayer by Alhaji Mohammadu, the Chief Imam of the town and by the Emir, Alhaji Mohammadu Aminu. They offered prayers of thanks for Allah's guidance over the past year and asked for Allah's continued benevolence for the coming year. The Moslems also prayed for peace and tranquillity in Nigeria.

Mr. Alhaji Aminu thanked the federal and state government for assisting his local Authority and he appealed to the public to pay their taxes promptly so his Local Authority could commence more, useful projects. The Emir also requested that everyone give generously to various relief funds established to help people in drought-stricken areas North of Zaria.

After the prayers and speeches were over, there were traditional dances and songs. Then the crowd watched as horsemen galloped by. The horsemen, after racing in front of the crowd, rode up to the Emir's Palace to pay homage to the local ruler.
