  • Description

The people of Cameroun celebrated the third anniversary of their country's unification day in a colourful parade in the capital, Yaounde, on Tuesday (20 May).

President Ahmadou Ahidjo was among the thousands who attended the celebrations.

Three years ago on Tuesday, the United Republic of Cameroun was formed after the nation's six million people voted in a referendum to unite the then territories of France and Britain.

Despite the problems of a plural society, complicated by two superimposed European traditions -- French and English -- President Ahidjo has managed well in holding the country together.

His main strength lies in the fact that he was born in Garue in the North and comes from a minor tribe. Consequently, he cannot be accused of giving undue preference to his own people. He is regarded as the country's unifying force.
