  • Description

THERE WERE TWENTY-SIX (26) PEOPLE ABOARD THE ALLEGHENY AIRLINES PLANE LEFT PHILADELPHIA.

TWENTY-FIVE (25) WERE KILLED WHEN THE PLANE CRASHED INTO A MOUNTAIN NEAR WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.

THE DEAD INCLUDED SEVERAL BUSINESSMEN AND A CATHOLIC PRIEST. ALL THE CREW MEMBERS WERE KILLED.

THE SOLE SURVIVOR ... THIRTY-FIVE (35) YEAR-OLD LOUTS MATARAZZO (CQ) ... WAS TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL. HE TOLD REPORTERS: "THE LORD OPENED MY SIDE OF THE PLANE AND I WAS ABLE TO JUMP OUT."
RESCUERS FOUND HIM LEANING AGAINST A TREE ON THE SNOW-COVERED MOUNTAIN-SIDE. THEY WORKED THROUGH THE NIGHT TO RECOVER THE BODIES OF THE PASSENGERS AND CREW MEMBERS.

AND THEN IDENTIFICATION EXPERTS TOOK OVER AT A TEMPORARY MORGUE.

THIS WAS THE FIRST CRASH IN THE HISTORY OF ALLEGHENY AIRLINES SINCE IT BECAME A PASSENGER CARRIER TEN YEARS AGO.

WHAT CAUSED IT? NOBODY KNOWS. FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS WILL TRY TO FIND OUT TODAY.

MATARAZZO, THE MAN WHO LIVED, SAID THE PASSENGERS HAD JUST BEEN TOLD THE PLANE WAS ABOUT TO LAND. WHEN, "ALL OF A SUDDEN," HE SAID, "THE PILOT SEEMED TO RACE THE MOTORS AND PULL UP. AND THEN THE CRASH ... THE EXPLOSION."
