    In Abidjan on Thursday (June 29), President Felix Houphouet-Boigny officially inaugurated the new headquarters of the Association of African Engineers and Technicians (AITA).

    The Association, which began its activities in the Ivory Coast in 1956, now has 800 members and an ambitious training scheme for professional trades.

    Present at the opening ceremony with the Head of State were the President of AITA, M. Konan Lambert, and the Director General of Hotafric, M. Alcide Kacou.

    The new building will not only serve as the coordinating point for the running of AITA affairs, but also as the main centre for the training of Ivory Coast's future technicians. Living accommodations are also available in the centre for both members and students.

    SYNOPSIS: The new headquarters for the Association of African Engineers and Technicians (AITA) was inaugurated in Abidjan on Thursday, June twenty-ninth. Ivorian president Felix Houphouet-Boigny officially opened the building in a well-attended ceremony.

    Among the ranking officials present was M. Konan Lambert, President of the Association.

    AITA began activities in French-speaking Africa in 1954, and by 1960 had reached the point where the existing amenities were so limited that an expansion plan had to be undertaken. Today, with sight hundred members in the Ivory Coast, and an ambitious plan for training future professional men, the new headquarters have been completed at a cost of fifty million francs CFA. The new building will not only serve as a coordinating point for the running of AITA affairs, but also as the main centre for education and housing of the engineering and technical students.

    Prior to signing the inaugural book, President Houphouet-Boigny spoke of the importance of the AITA scheme for the future of the development of the Ivory Coast.
