  • Description

The two giant pandas given to the United States by the People's Republic of China were introduced to the press on Thursday (April 20) at Washington's National Zoo.

Mrs. Richard Nixon, wife of the U.S. President, formally accepted the 18-month old pandas -- given to the U.S. during President Nixon's recent visit to Peking -- from Mr. Ting Hung, head of the Chinese delegation who accompanied the animals to the United States.

The black and white pandas -- Hsing Hsing, a 74-pound (39 kilogram) male and Ling Ling, a 136-pound (61 kilogram) female -- breakfasted comfortably in their air conditioned glass pens as officials and newsmen looked on.

At the ceremony, Mrs. Nixon said "pandemonium" would break out once the pandas went on public view. Mr. Ting said the pandas, like the musk oxen President Nixon gave the Chinese, "are a symbol of the friendship" between the peoples of both countries. Mrs. Nixon also received a picture and photo album from the Chinese delegates.
