  • Description

Jehan Sadat, wife of Egypt's President Anwar Sadat celebrated Mother's Day in Cairo on Thursday (21 March) by presenting medals and certificates to mothers whose sons had been killed in the October war against Israel.

Representatives of many women's organisations attended the ceremony.

Jehan Sadat, who during the course of the war spent 20-hour days visiting troops, touring hospitals and working as a bandage roller has been called by the armed forces: "Mother of the Fighting Men".

And in an exchange of letters with the sister of an Israeli frogman who died on a raid against Port Said, she showed her sympathy was for all who had lost sons - whatever side they fought on.

In the letter she said: "Wars know no real victor, no real vanquished. The losses hit both sides, the price is enormous and painful. It is the sacrifice of thousands of young people, the mourning and grief in the hearts of mothers, the wives, the fathers. Out hearts are pained to the depths by the loss of one young person, of one child."
Mrs. Sadat, who is half English, has also a considerable reputation for raising the stature and increasing the rights of Egyptian women.
