  • Description

Egypt's Prime Minister, Dr. Aziz Sidky, has opened the Cairo International Trade Fair.

It's being held at the Gezeira exhibition grounds, and 34 countries are taking part.

Dr. Sidky opened the fair on Thursday (2 March) -- and it will remain open for three weeks.

SYNOPSIS: A red carpet welcome for Egyptian Prime Minister Aziz Sidky, arriving at the capital's Gazira exhibition ground on Thursday to open the Cairo International Trade Fair. Thirty-four countries are participating at the fair -- and the pavilion of India was one of the first to be visited by Dr. Sidky.

Besides visiting national pavilions, Dr. Sidky also saw something of seventeen international firms which have exhibition stands at the fair. The site is open to the public for a total of three week -- and there will be a national day highlighting the exhibits of each participating country.

Poland is one of several East European countries with a pavilion at the fair. The Hungarians were also represented, and a top-level Hungarian delegation was due in Cairo during the fair to sign a new trade agreement with the Egyptians.

Western countries are also there in force. But Dr. Sidky has made it plain in the past that he feels he can get a better deal on large-scale industrial agreements from Eastern European countries. The Prime Minister also believes there will be a rapidly shrinking market for imported consumer goods in Egypt. He estimates that within the next ten years, Egyptian factories will provide about ninety-five per cent of domestic consumer goods.

Dr. Sidky, he continuing his tour, reckons that by the end of the decade principal imports to Egypt will be heavy machinery and capital goods. So future exhibitors at the International Fair may find business getting tougher.
