  • Description

ABOUT 40,000 AMERICANS WHO WANT THEIR COUNTRY TO WIN THE VIETNAM WAR STAGED A MARCH IN WASHINGTON D.C. ON SATURDAY (4 APRIL) AS THE RIGHT-WING'S ANSWER TO LAST NOVEMBER'S HUGE ANT-WAR DEMONSTRATIONS.

THE "MARCH OF VICTORY", LED BY FUNDAMENTALIST RADIO PREACHER DR. CARL MCINTIRE, FOLLOWED THE ROUTE OF THE NOVEMBER PARADE FROM THE CAPITOL BUILDING TO THE GROUNDS OF THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT FOR A RALLY.

THERE WERE VARYING REPORTS ABOUT THE TOTAL ATTENDANCE BUT IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT IT WAS FAR SHORT OF THE 100,000 SOME ORGANIZERS HAD PREDICTED.

THOUSANDS OF PLACARDS, BANNERS AND FLAGS WAVED ABOVE THE MARCHERS. ALSO IN EVIDENCE WERE MANY BIBLES, INCLUDING ONE CLUTCHED IN BOTH HANDS BY DR. MCLNTIRE
AS THE MARCH NEARED THE RALLYING POINT, SONGS ROSE FROM THE RANKS INCLUDING HYMNS AND SUCH MARTIAL AND PATRIOTICIARS AS "AMERICA" AND "BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC" AND "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER."
THE MARCH AND RALLY WENT OFF WITHOUT SERIOUS INCIDENT ALTHOUGH THREE WERE A FEW ARRESTS. MOST OF THE MARCHERS WERE WELL-DRESSED AND MIDDLE-AGED IN CONTRAST TO THE PREDOMINANTLY YOUTHFUL ANT-WAR DEMONSTRATORS OF LAST NOVEMBER.

AT THE RALLYING POINT DR. MCINTIRE READ MESSAGES OF CONGRATULATIONS FROM VARIOUS U.S. SENATORS INCLUDING RIGHT WINGER BARRY GOLDWATER.
