    POLICE HAD TO USE WATER CANNON YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) TO QUELL FIERCE RIOTING WHICH BROKE OUT AT A RALLY IN RECKLINGHAUSEN, HELD BY WEST GERMANY'S EXTREME-RIGHT NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND HEADED BY N.P.D. LEADER ADOLF VON THADDEN.

    DURING A MOUNTED POLICE CHARGE A 53-YEAR-OLD MAN AND POLICEMAN WERE TRAMPLED UNDERFOOT AND BADLY INJURED.

    THE TROUBLE STARTED AS 200 DEMONSTRATORS, MAINLY YOUTHS TRIED TO PREVENT PEOPLE ENTERING THE RALLY HALL BY BLOCKING THE DOORWAY. POLICE ON HORSEBACK TRIED TO DISLODGE THEM BUT FAILED, SO WATER CANNON WATER FINALLY BROUGHT INTO ACTION TO BREAK THE MOB UP.

    LATER ABOUT 1000 YOUTHS TOOK PART IN AN ORDERLY TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION OUTSIDE THE HALL IN PROTEST AGAINST THE VON THADDEN RALLY. POLICE DID NOT INTERVENE.

    THE PREVIOUS NIGHT 27 POLICE AND MORE THAN A DOZEN DEMONSTRATORS WERE INJURED, SOME OF THEM BADLY, IN A FIGHT AT AN NPD RALLY, ALSO ATTENDED BY VON THADDEN, IN TH NORTHERN GERMAN TOWN OF KIEL.
